Deakin and Stradling hit Qualifying Marks at Puma Indoor

Phoenix, Ariz. - The women's track & field team had two national qualifiers in their first meet of the season, with Karsten Deakin in the shot put and Brooke Stradling in the 600 meters.

Deakin threw 12.88 meters to beat the qualifying mark of 12.67 meters in the event and finished in second place. Julianna Perez finished in third at 11.12 meters. Deakin and Perez also placed third (13.26 m) and fourth (12.67 m) in the weight throw.

Stradling ran a time of 1:39.72 to win the 600 and beat the qualifying time of 1:40.04. Ciara Bardwell finished right behind in second, but just barely missed it after running 1:40.60.

2021 Cross Country National Runner-Up Kate Brockman and 2021 XC All-American Makayla Engelhardt both went 1-2 in the mile and in the 1000 meters, with Brockman winning the 1000, 3:14.96 to 3:16.88, and Engelhardt winning the mile, 5:32.94 to 5:33.67.

Kaitlyn Doyle placed second in the 60-meter dash (8.04) and third in the 200-meter dash (25.74). Anessa Rodriguez finished in second place in both the pole vault (2.55 m) and the long jump (4.77 m). Shay Bernal was third in the high jump with a height of 1.45 meters.

The women will return to Paradise Valley next Saturday to compete in the PVCC Indoor Invitational.
