Day One of Outdoor Nationals Completed

Levelland, Texas - The Mesa track & field team competed on day one of the NJCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, with the T-Birds earning six All-American honors. The top eight individuals & relay teams in each event earn All-American recognition.

In the women's pole vault final, Jolynn Fleming and Janie Tenney tied for third place, with both vaulting a height of 3.20 meters (10 feet, 6 inches). In the men's pole vault final, Lofton Thomas also tied for third place with a height of 4.70 meters (15 feet, 5 inches), Hyrum Broby tied for eighth place with a height of 4.30 meters (14 feet, 1.25 inches), and Cayman Wilkes was given a no height.

In the women's javelin throw final, Kassidy Faraci was fifth with a throw of 38.23 meters (125 feet, 5.12 inches). While Kaprice Faraci was 11th (33.40 meters/ 109 feet, 6.96 inches) and Shay Bernal was fouled out.

The women's 4x800 meter relay team (Mary Siml, Tanaeya Johnson, Zanaa Ramirez, and Ellis Collins) placed seventh with a time of 10:02.03. The men's 4x800 meter relay team (Andrew McCumber, Geoffrey Grossthal, Yotuel Garcia, and Noah Clark) placed 14th with a time of 8:10.83.

Jacob Samford qualified for the men's 400-meter dash final after tying for second place (47.97 seconds) in the prelims. The final will take place on Thursday. Malik Chandler ran a time of 56.57 in the men's 400-meter hurdles prelims, but was unable to qualify for the final.

Nathan Mann ran a time of 34:18 in the men's 10,000 meter final.

After day one, the women's team is in fifth place with 16 points and the men's team is in 11th place with 5.83 points. Competition resumes tomorrow with the T-Birds competing in the men's shot put final, men's 1500 meter prelim, men's 800 meter prelim, and the men's & women's 3000 meter steeplechase final.
