Day One of Region I Champs Completed

Mesa, Ariz. - The first day of the 2021 NJCAA Region I Championships was completed Tuesday night at John D. Riggs Stadium, with the women's team currently in second place with 68 points and the men's team in third with 61 points. Other teams competing in the team championship are Central Arizona College, Glendale CC, Paradise Valley CC, and Pima CC. Trinidad State JC (Colorado) is also competing, but their athletes will not count in the team scoring.

As part of the region championship meet guidelines, the top individual athlete/ relay team in an event, excluding Trinidad State athletes, will automatically qualify for the 2021 NJCAA Outdoor Championships.

T-birds who won an event include Caden Resendez in the men's 3000-meter steeplechase (9:41.31); Kaprice Faraci in the women's javelin throw (119 feet, nine inches); Lofton Thomas (15-5) and Janie Tenney (10-11.75) in the men's and women's pole vault; along with the women's 4x800 meter relay team (9:47.23), which consisted of Mary Siml, Zanaa Ramirez, Tanaeya Johnson, and Ellis Collins.

Second place finishers include Nathan Mann in the men's 10,000 meters (33:02.49), his first NJCAA qualifying mark of the season; Desmond Lott in the men's hammer throw (145-4); Kassidy Faraci in the women's javelin throw (111-7); and Jolynn Fleming in the women's pole vault (10-6).

Third place athletes include Masen Hofmann in the men's 10,000 meters (34:50.89); Shay Bernal in the women's javelin throw (110-1); Hyrum Broby (15-1) and Madison Irish (8-6.25) in the men's and women's pole vault; and the men's 4x800 meter relay team (8:04.85), which consisted of Andrew McCumber, Yotuel Garcia, Ivan Duran, and Geoffrey Grossthal.

In the men's hammer throw, Demond Lott placed second (145-4) Noah Miller placed fifth (121-2), and John Gomez placed eighth (115). In the women's hammer throw, Julianna Perez placed fifth (110-10), Kassidy Faraci placed seventh (107-6), and Kaprice Faraci placed eighth (99-10).

Desmond Lott also placed eighth in the men's javelin throw (112-08). Shay Bernal also placed sixth in the women's long jump (14-5).

The remainder of the meet will take place Thursday evening.
