Mesa Basketball travels to Scottsdale on Wednesday

Tuesday January 16, 2024 - 1:00 p.m. | Dylan DeVlieger

Mesa Basketball will pack their bags and take a visit to Scottsdale Community College on Wednesday as they take on the Fighting Artichokes.

Women's Basketball:

The No. 6 MCC Women's Basketball team survived a late scare from SCC on Saturday as they escaped with a 52-51 victory. The win improved their record to 11-4 (6-3 ACCAC) and snapped a three game losing streak to Scottsdale.

After a slow second quarter, Ashiian Hunter provided a jump start to the T-Bird offense in the third scoring 10 points. Mackenzie Shivers and Kamiyah Hurd made big plays down the stretch to help the Lady T-Birds come out on top.

Scottsdale's bench was a big reason the Artichokes were able to come so close to victory as Ella Hoover led all scorers with 17 points and Kristin Scabby tallied 12 in the loss. Scottsdale's bench accounted for 38 of their 51 points.

Men's Basketball:

The 4-11 (2-7 ACCAC) Thunderbird men are riding a seven game losing streak, the longest in over 10 seasons. MCC has done well to compete in the first half of their last seven games, MCC has led or been tied going into halftime in four of their last seven.

A concerning consistent factor in all their losses has been second half scoring as well as points allowed in the final 20 minutes of action. In all of their last seven games MCC has been outscored in the second half by an average margin of 11 points.

Scottsdale was riding a five game losing streak until they came out on top against the T-Birds. The Artichokes had been struggling with slower starts than their opponents during their losing streak, trailing their opponents in four of their five losses by an average of 14 points going into halftime. That changed in their win over Mesa as they led going into the halftime locker room, 42-31.

The games will be held at Scottsdale CC, the women will tip-off at 5:30 p.m. and the men will follow at 7:30 p.m.
