Jayla Johnson Named To NJCAA DII All-American Second Team

Charlotte, NC - The National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) announced their 2021-22 NJCAA Division II Women's Basketball All-American Teams on Tuesday afternoon. The All-American selections were made by the members of the NJCAA DII Women's Basketball Committee. Jayla Johnson from the Mesa women's basketball team was named to the NJCAA All-American Second Team.

"Jayla (Johnson) has been one of the most reliable teammates our program has ever seen," said Mesa head women's basketball coach Kori Stephenson. "She is an All-American in many facets of her life. She is a great human being and earned every bit of recognition she has received."

Full NJCAA DII All-American Teams

Sophomore Jayla Johnson won the ACCAC DII Women's Basketball Player of the Week four times this past season. Following the season, she was also named the Region 1 Division II Player of the Year, named to the 1st Team All-ACCAC, and 1st Team for All-Region I Division II. Johnson finished the regular season averaging 13.3 points per game and also averaged close to six rebounds per game, and about three assists per game.

Head Coach Kori Stephenson continued to say about Jayla Johnson, "She brought so much competitiveness, composure, and a killer instinct to our team. She has such an uncanny mental approach to being a student-athlete, and that is something I have never been around!"
