MESA, AZ - The Arizona Community College Athletic Conference (ACCAC) announced their women's basketball postseason accolades on Thursday afternoon. Thunderbird guard Jayla Johnson was named the ACCAC DII Women's Basketball Player of the Year. Johnson and her teammate Mykah Anderson were also named to the All ACCAC/Region 1 First Team.

Sophomore Jayla Johnson finished the regular season averaging 13.3 points per game and won the ACCAC DII Women's Basketball Player of the Week four times this season. Johnson also averaged close to six rebounds per game, and about three assists per game.

"Jayla (Johnson) brings so much competitiveness, composure, and killer instinct to our team," said Mesa head women's basketball coach Kori Stephenson. "She has such an uncanny mental approach to being a student-athlete, and that is something I have never been around!"

Coach Stephenson continued, "She has embraced one of our philosophies of focusing on the process; not the outcome. Therefore she developed into the player of the year!"

Johnson was joined on the All ACCAC/Region 1 team by freshman Mykah Anderson. Anderson made a strong impact in her first season with the Mesa T-Birds. She averaged a little over 10 points per game, along with five rebounds and four assists per game. Mykah Anderson attended Chandler High School and originally committed to NCAA DI Idaho State, before transferring to Mesa.

"Mykah's (Anderson) humility, as well as her coachable attitude, has caused her extreme growth this year as a player and a leader," said head coach Kori Stephenson. "She has turned into our lockdown defender!"

The 13th ranked Thunderbirds return to the hardwood this coming Wednesday, March 2 when they host the #4 seed, Glendale Gauchos. Tip time is slated for 7 pm inside of Theo Heap Gymnasium. The winner of this contest will face the winner between #2 Pima and #3 Scottsdale in the ACCAC Championship Game on Saturday, March 5 at 7 pm.
