(RV) Thunderbirds Clinch ACCAC DII Regular Season Title

Phoenix, AZ - The Mesa Thunderbirds defeated the Phoenix College Bears 63-53 on Saturday afternoon, and couple that with the Cochise Apaches upsetting the Pima Aztecs, the T-Birds have now claimed the number one seed in the ACCAC DII Women's Basketball postseason tournament. This means Mesa will host a playoff game on Wednesday, March 2 and if they win that game, would then host the championship game that Saturday, March 5 as well.
With the victory, the Thunderbirds; who are currently receiving votes in the latest NJCAA DII Women's Basketball National Poll, improve to 19-7 overall and 14-5 in ACCAC action. The T-Birds have won their last six straight games. With the loss, the Phoenix College Bears drop to 7-21 overall and 2-16 in ACCAC play.
Mesa led throughout Saturday's contest, to sweep the season series against the Phoenix Bears. It was a low-scoring first quarter, with Mesa holding a slim 13-10 lead. Both teams scored 18 points apiece in the second quarter, with MCC taking a 31-28 lead into halftime.
In the second half, Mesa began to pull away. The Thunderbirds outscored Phoenix College 16-11 in the third quarter and never looked back.
In the win, Mesa shot 37% from the floor. The T-Birds struggled from the charity stripe (16-for-26) and from beyond the three-point arc (1-of-16).
Three players scored in double-figures, led by Love Troupe's team-high 17 points and nine rebounds.
The Thunderbirds close out the regular season this Tuesday when they travel to Scottsdale to face the Fighting Artichokes. Tip time is scheduled for 5:30 pm.
