Mesa, AZ - The Mesa Thunderbirds only played from behind once on Wednesday evening, in their route of the Glendale Gauchos 86-61. The win capped off a perfect sophomore night in the home regular-season finale for the Thunderbirds.

With the victory, the Thunderbirds; who are currently receiving votes in the latest NJCAA DII Women's Basketball National Poll, improve to 17-7 overall and 12-5 in ACCAC action. The T-Birds have won their last four straight and have won nine out of their last ten games. With the loss, Glendale drops to 4-23 overall and 2-15 in ACCAC play.

Mesa jumped on the scoreboard first on Wednesday evening, just a minute into the game. Jayla Johnson hit a two-point jumper following a Love Troupe steal to give the T-Birds an early 2-0 lead. Just seconds later, the Gauchos raced down the floor and Clarissa Lopez hit a three-pointer; one of the seven made all evening by Glendale, to give the Gauchos the 3-2 lead. That was the only lead Glendale would have all evening. After one-quarter of play, Mesa led 21-10 and never looked back.

Mesa had one of their better offensive evenings of the season, shooting 52% from the floor, 42% from beyond the three-point arc, and they only missed one free-throw all night. Every player that got in for the Thunderbirds scored at least one point.

With this being the regular-season home finale, the Thunderbirds honored and recognized their four outstanding sophomores following the games. Those four are Rylee Young, Myka Taliman, Stacey Begay, and Jayla Johnson.

The Thunderbirds will now hit the road for three games to close out the regular season. First up is a date with the 10th ranked Pima Aztecs (19-7 overall, 12-5 ACCAC) on Friday evening in Tucson. This is a make-up game from back on February 9. This battle could very well decide the #1 seed and who has homecourt advantage in the ACCAC DII Women's Basketball Tournament; which begins play on Wednesday, March 2. Tip time for Friday's contest at Pima is set for 5:30 pm.
