Balanced (RV) Thunderbirds Topple Bears 81-50

Mesa, AZ - The Mesa Thunderbirds used a strong second quarter to blow past the Phoenix Bears on Monday evening, by a final of 81-50.

With the victory, the Thunderbirds; who currently continue to receive votes in the latest NJCAA DII Women's Basketball National Poll, improve to 16-7 overall and 11-5 in ACCAC action. With the loss, the Phoenix College Bears fall to 7-19 overall and 2-14 in ACCAC play.

Phoenix College kept it close with Mesa on Monday evening for a quarter. In the first ten minutes of action, the Bears kept up with the T-Birds, only trailing by three points at 19-16.

The Thunderbirds stepped on the gas in the second quarter on both ends of the floor. Offensively, Mesa struck for 20 points on 42% shooting from the field. The Thunderbird defense held Phoenix to just two made shots in the second quarter en route to a 39-21 lead at halftime.

Mesa continued to press hard on the gas in the third quarter, this time outscoring Phoenix 24-11. The Thunderbird defense held the Bears in check, holding PC to just four made shots from the field.

In the fourth quarter, Mesa was able to rest their starters and allow their bench to get some valuable minutes leading into postseason play.

Mesa had four players finish in double-figure scoring, led by Myka Taliman's 14 points. Rylee Young, Taylor Tiulana, and Jasmine Belt each added 12 points apiece. Belt also tied for a game-high 10 rebounds and led the T-Birds with five steals in the win.

The Thunderbirds close out the home portion of their 2021-22 regular-season schedule this Wednesday when they welcome the Glendale Gauchos to town. Tip time is scheduled for 5:30 pm inside of Theo Heap Gymnasium.
