MESA, AZ - For the fifth straight week, a player from the Mesa Thunderbirds women's basketball team has been named the ACCAC DII Women's Basketball Player of the Week. Sophomore guard Jayla Johnson earned the award for the third time this season, following, her performances at Arizona Western College and at home against Central Arizona College.

Last Wednesday at Arizona Western, Johnson played a team-high 38 minutes and finished with a team-best 19 points, two rebounds, and a steal. Later last week, the T-Birds welcomed Central Arizona to town. In the upset win of the Vaqueras, Johnson finished with a double-double of 13 points and 13 rebounds, and she also finished with six assists. While Johnson struggled shooting from the field last week, she combined to shoot 14-for-18 from the free-throw line.

As a team, the T-Birds have won six out of their seven games and are currently receiving votes in the latest NJCAA DII Women's Basketball National Poll. Mesa was originally scheduled to return to the hardwood this coming Wednesday against 12th ranked Pima; however, that game has been rescheduled for Friday, February 18 at 5:30 pm in Tucson.

After taking the week off from game action, Mesa will host the 19th ranked Eastern Arizona Lady Gila Monsters this Saturday, February 12 at 2 pm inside of Theo Heap Gymnasium.
