(RV) Thunderbirds Cruise To 67-36 Victory Against South Mountain

Mesa, AZ - The Mesa Thunderbirds cruised to their 12th victory of the season on Wednesday evening, defeating South Mountain by a final of 67-36 inside of Theo Heap Gymnasium.

With the victory, Mesa; who is currently receiving votes in the latest NJCAA DII Women's Basketball National Poll, improve to 12-6 overall and 7-4 in Arizona Community College Athletic Conference (ACCAC) play. With the loss, South Mountains drops to 1-10 overall and remains winless in conference play at 0-7.

Mesa controlled Wednesday's contest from the opening tip, claiming a 16-2 lead after one-quarter of play. Both of South Mountain's points came from the free-throw line. The defense continued to play strong in the second quarter, not allowing the Cougars to make a field goal until four minutes in. At the half, MCC led South Mountain 38-14.

In the second half, Mesa continued to play hard and outscored the Cougars 21-6 in the third quarter. In the fourth, Mesa went to their bench players as they defeated South Mountain by 31 points.

In the win, Mesa limited South Mountain to 16% shooting from the field. Three players scored in double-figures for the Thunderbirds, led by Stacey Begay's 16 points on 7-of-10 shooting.

Mesa returns to action this Saturday, January 29, when they make the short trip to Chandler-Gilbert Community College. Tip time is slated for 2 pm inside of Theo Heap Gymnasium.
