Jayla Johnson Named ACCAC DII Women’s Basketball Player of the Week

MESA, AZ - Sophomore guard Jayla Johnson (Maricopa, AZ / Maricopa HS) from the Mesa Community College women's basketball team was named the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference (ACCAC) Division II Women's Basketball Player of the Week, for her performance from games during the week of January 3 through January 9. This is the first conference award won by a member of the women's basketball team this season.

This past week Johnson and the Thunderbirds played in a pair of road contests at Eastern Arizona College and Glendale Community College. In those two games, Jayla Johnson averaged 16.5 points, and added 11 rebounds, three steals and an assist. On the season, Johnson is leading the T-Birds in scoring and three-point percentage.

As a team, the T-Birds split their games last week, moving to 9-6 overall and 4-4 in ACCAC play. The T-Birds are currently receiving votes in the latest NJCAA DII Women's Basketball National Poll.

The Thunderbird women return to the hardwood this coming Saturday, when they host the Scottsdale Fighting Artichokes in an ACCAC conference clash. The game is scheduled to begin at 2pm inside of Theo Heap Gymnasium, with the men's game to follow around 4pm.
