Lady Chaps Upset (RV) Thunderbirds 63-47

MESA, AZ - The Mesa Thunderbird women; who are currently receiving votes in the latest NJCAA DII Women's Basketball National Poll, were upset on Wednesday afternoon by the Midland College Lady Chaparrals 63-47.

With the loss, Mesa falls to 7-5 overall, while Midland improves to 9-3 overall with the victory.

The first quarter was a tough one for the Lady T-Birds. This was Mesa's first game in the last ten days, and first time the team has really gathered since the holiday break. MCC also was without one of their starters; Myka Taliman. But the T-Birds would not make any excuses. They played from behind the entire first quarter, but only trailed 14-10.

In the second quarter, Mesa mounted a comeback. The T-Birds and Lady Chaps each scored 17 points a piece, making the score 31-27 at the break. Mesa had drawn within one of the Lady Chaps, but surrendered a three-pointer with ten seconds left in the half to give the Lady Chaps more of a cushion.

In the second half, the intensity remained high between the Lady Chaps and T-Birds. Both defenses came to play, as both teams were held to 32% shooting from the field. Midland outscored Mesa 15-13 in the third quarter, to claim the slim 46-40 lead.

The tables turned in the fourth quarter, as Midland's offense went off. The Lady Chaps outscored Mesa 13-2 in the first seven minutes of the quarter. The T-Birds would try to claw their way back into the game late, but would eventually drop the first of two games against Midland.

In the loss, three players scored in double-figures for the Thunderbirds. Mykah Anderson and Jayla Johnson both finished with 14 points apiece, while Zari Watkins added 12 points.

Mesa returns to action tomorrow (Thursday) afternoon against this same Midland College squad. Tomorrow's opening tip is scheduled for 2pm and can be seen and heard live on Mesa T-Birds Sports Live. Don't forget to check out the MCC Team Shop, as well as our Booster Club.
