Mesa Completes Weekend Sweep Of Williston State

MESA, AZ - The Mesa Thunderbirds defeated the Williston State Tetons on Sunday afternoon by a final of 57-30, inside of Theo Heap Gymnasium. The win was the second straight for Mesa in as many days against Williston State.

With the win, Mesa improves to 7-4 overall and will now take a break from game action for the holidays. Following the loss, Williston State drops to 5-10 overall.

Following a thrilling overtime affair on Saturday evening, the Tetons and Thunderbirds met again for a Sunday matinee. Mesa came out determined right out of the gate. The T-Birds jumped out to an early 6-0 lead in the first two minutes and never looked back. After the first 10 minutes of play, MCC led 12-7.

In the second quarter, the Thunderbirds kept their foot firmly on the gas, as they outscored the Tetons 10-6 in the quarter to take a 22-13 lead into halftime.

Williston State scored four quick points in the first few minutes of the third quarter to draw within five points of the T-Birds, before MCC answered back. The Thunderbirds outscored the Tetons 14-8 in the third quarter; stretching their lead to as much as 17 points.

The fourth quarter flew by, as the Mesa offense remained on cruise control. The Thunderbird offense scored 21 points and the T-Bird defense held Williston State to just 9 points; on their way to a 57-30 victory.

In the win, the Thunderbirds had two players score in double-figures. Mykah Anderson led the way with 14 points, while Jayla Johnson added 11 points and seven rebounds. Stacey Begay finished with five points and a team high 11 rebounds. 

Following the holiday break, Mesa will return to the hardwood for a pair of home games against Midland College on December 29 and 30. On Wednesday, December 29, tip time is set for 12 noon and the game on December 30 against Midland is scheduled for a 2pm tip time.
