Women's Basketball Wins Season Opener, 72-63, Against Utah State Eastern

Mesa, AZ - It was a great way to start the season for the Mesa Thunderbirds women's basketball team as they defeated the Utah State Eastern Eagles, 72-63, at Theo Heap Gym Wednesday night.

Tenacious defense coupled with quality offensive attacks were too much for the Eagles.  Mesa on the night forced 28 total turnovers, seven steals coming from sophomore guard, Jayla Johnson.

Three T-Birds scored in double-figures, Stacey Begay scoring 14 points, Mykah Anderson scoring 13 with Rylee Young notching 10 points.  Myka Taliman scored six points, had seven assists and pulled down four rebounds.

Mesa had a solid night at the free throw line, connecting on 11 of 12 from the charity stripe.

With the win, the T-Birds are 1-0 on the early season as they eye the Mesa Classic this coming weekend at Theo Heap Gym.  Mesa plays at 7:30 pm Friday night and 3 pm on Saturday afternoon.
