Mesa, AZ - On Tuesday afternoon, the Mesa Thunderbirds hosted the Paradise Valley Pumas for an ACCAC doubleheader. The Pumas defeated the T-Birds 11-2 in 5-innings in game one, before the T-Birds rebounded for a 9-1 win in game two.

With the split, the Thunderbirds move to 9-31 overall and 9-31 in ACCAC conference play. With the game one loss, Mesa was officially eliminated from the Region 1 Division II playoffs. Paradise Valley moved to 6-34 overall and 6-34 in ACCAC play with the split.

Game One:

Both teams got on the scoreboard in the first inning in Tuesday's double-dip between the Pumas and the T-Birds. Paradise Valley ripped four runs off of T-Bird starting pitcher Hannah Matson. She lasted just one-third of an inning while allowing four runs; all earned on two hits and three walks.

The T-Bird offense responded with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the frame but was held scoreless from there on out.

Alanie Ornelas relieved Hannah Matson in the circle and threw the final 4.2 innings. Mesa fell to Paradise Valley 11-2 in a final 5-innings in game one.

Game Two:

After a route by Paradise Valley in game one, it was the T-Birds' time to pay the Pumas back. Mesa struck for four runs in the second inning, one run in the third inning, and another four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning; for the 9-1 run-rule victory.

The T-Bird offense combined for 12 hits in game two, with the top three in the T-Birds batting order (Alanie Ornelas, Justine Encinas, and May Obata), combining to go 6-for-12 at the plate with five RBIs, three runs scored, and one double.

In the circle, starter Gillian Gardner was brilliant. The righty tossed a complete game while allowing one run on four hits with five strikeouts and one walk.

The Thunderbirds return to action next Tuesday when they travel to the West Valley to face Glendale for an ACCAC doubleheader. The first pitch of game one is scheduled for 1 pm.
