Dramatic rally falls short in softball doubleheader sweep by Pima

Mesa, AZ – A dramatic six-run sixth inning rally fell just short of earning a split of a doubleheader for Mesa softball (7-25, 7-25) against Pima (13-17, 13-17) Saturday afternoon at Thunderbirds Field.

MCC used six hits, and got two RBIs from Alex Reeve in the inning. Reeve went 6-6 for the day with three RBIs. But Mesa was unable to push across the tying run and fell, 12-11. The opener went to the Aztecs, 20-3 in five innings.

Game One Recap

As has happened to the T-Birds a number of times previously this season, Pima jumped to a 5-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back. MCC's only offense came in the form of a three-run home run by Kylie Wilhelms in the second inning, It was her third of the year.

Game Two Recap

Down 12-3 in the fourth, the T-Birds began their comeback with two runs in that inning. But they still trailed 12-5 heading into the sixth. With one out, MCC strung together six hits, a walk, a hit batter and an error, but with the tying run at third could not push it across. Meanwhile, Gilliam Gardner, who had gotten off to a rocky start, limited the Atecs to just one run and one hit over the final four frames.  However, with the heart of the order due up in the seventh, Mesa went down in order.

MCC collected 18 hits in the game, Reeve and Wilhelms had four each with Absidee Sanchez getting three and Rylee Blackburn and Brynlee Golding had two each.

The T-Birds now face a road doubleheader at 12th-ranked Central Arizona Tuesday, the first of six consecutive away games.
