Eastern Arizona sweeps softball

Mesa, AZ – Eastern Arizona put on a hitting clinic in the first game and then stopped Mesa from rallying in the second in an ACCAC softball doubleheader sweep Saturday at Thunderbirds' Field.

The Gila Monsters (30-8, 22-6) won the opener 21-1 in a run-rue five inning contest. They then completed the sweep over MCC (7-21, 7-21) in a regulation seven-innings, 12-5.

Game One Recap

EAC came out firing in the first contest, scoring seven runs in the opening frame and collecting 20 hits in total. The T-Birds avoided a shutout in the fifth inning on successive singles by Alex Reeve, Ariana Preciado and Alanie Ornelas.

Game Two Recap

This time Eastern gradually built a 7-0 lead in the first three innings. But Mesa batted back with two in the third on a home run by Ornelas, her ninth of the season, which knocked in Brynlee Golding, who had singled.

MCC added two more in the fourth when Kylie Wilhelms and Reeve both singed. Wilhelms scored on a fielder's choice by Odessa Treese and Reeve came home on a sacrifice fly by Kaleiah Tatlonghai.

Wilhems capped the T-Birds' scoring with a solo home run in the fifth, her second of the year.

Mesa will visit Chandler-Gilbert for a doubleheader Tuesday at 1 p.m.
