Ornelos stars as Mesa softball sweeps Glendale

Mesa, AZ -Alanie Ornelos was almost a hero two weeks ago. Saturday she definitely was.

Her three-run homer, with Mesa trailing by two in the eighth inning, gave MCC a 7-6 win over Glendale (9-15, 7-13) in the first game of a doubleheader the T-Birds would eventually sweep to run their winning streak to four. Mesa (6-14, 6-14) won the second game, 4-3.

It was two weeks ago that Ornelos hit what would have been considered the biggest home run in Mesa history had it not been for a Phoenix seventh inning rally. The homer, a grand slam in the bottom of the sixth, put MCC ahead of No. 1-ranked and defending national champion PC heading to the final inning. However, the Bears rallied to salvage the victory.

Saturday there was no time for GCC to rally, it was what they call a walk-off. By the way, did we mention she had already homered earlier in the game? That came leading off the fifth. giving the T-Birds a 3-1 lead. On top of everything, she even singled in the second.

Ornelos wasn't the only Mesa hitter to go deep. Alex Reeve hit a two-run shot in the second. In addition, Odessa Treece had a pair of singles and drove in two and Brynlee Golding had a pair of hits.

In game two, Gillian Gardner went the distance on the mound, shutting down the Gauchos in order in the top of the seventh protecting a one-run lead. Reeve had three hits in this game.

MCC travels to Arizona Western Tuesday for its next action.
