Thunderbirds Trump Pumas In Doubleheader Sweep

Phoenix, AZ - The Mesa Thunderbirds offense got going early on Saturday afternoon and did not let up against the Paradise Valley Pumas, sweeping PVCC 17-8 in six innings in game one, and winning 15-1 in a final five innings in game two.

With the sweep, the Thunderbirds improve to 4-14 overall and 4-14 in ACCAC play. With the losses, Paradise Valley falls to 1-17 overall and 1-17 in ACCAC action.

Game One:

The Thunderbirds offense was on full display Saturday, beginning in game one; where the T-Birds struck for 17 runs. Mesa scored runs in every inning of game one. The T-Birds got on the board first with a four-run first inning, followed by three runs in the second inning, and then another four runs in the third inning. MCC would tack on six more runs in the final three innings to put the game away.

The first seven batters in the Mesa order finished game one with at least two hits each. Alex Reeve led the way going a perfect 5-for-5 at the plate with four doubles, two runs scored, and a team-high six RBI's.

In the circle, Hannah Matson (2-3) picked up her second win of the season, tossing 4.1 innings, while allowing eight runs on 11 hits.

Game Two:

In game two, the T-Bird bats picked up right where they left off. Mesa scored a run in the top of the first inning and never looked back. Mesa would score at least one run in each inning in their 15-1 victory in a final 5-innings.

Alex Reeve and Justine Encinas both led the team with three hits apiece in the victory. Reeve finished Saturday afternoon 8-for-9 at the plate with five doubles and a homerun.

Gillian Gardner (2-6) picked up the win for the T-Birds in the circle in game two. She twirled a complete game, surrendering just one unearned run on four hits. She struckout three and walked three in her five innings of work.

The Thunderbirds have the week off, before returning home next Saturday, March 19 for an ACCAC doubleheader against the Glendale Gauchos. The first pitch is scheduled for 12 Noon.
