Mesa, AZ – Despite throwing a major scare into the defending national champions and No. 1 team in the, the Mesa softball team dropped a doubleheader to Phoenix Saturday, 16-4 (6) and 6-4.
It was the second game that could propel MCC for the rest of the season. Down 3-0 going into theb bottom of the sixth, the T-Birds rallied with two out. First, Alex Reese walked and then Odessa Treese singled. After Brynlee Golding reached on an error, loading the bases, Alanie Ormelas delivered a grand slam home run over the left field fence, giving Mesa a 4-3 lead.
After the Bears scored three in the top of the seventh, MCC was unable to muster another rally.
May Obata and Adrian Preciado each delivered two hits for the T-Birds while Kylie Wilhelms had a pair in the opener.
Mesa will wait until a week from Saturday for its next action when it will travel to Paradise Valley for a noon doubleheader. Its games will GateWay, scheduled for Tuesday, have been cancelled.
