MTF finishes tied for 12th at Outdoor Nationals

Hobbs, NM - The Thunderbirds men's track & field team wrapped up the 2023 NJCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday.

The T-Birds finished the meet tied for 12th place with Western Texas College in the team standings with 26 points each. Mesa also finished as the top-ranked ACCAC/Region I school.

The 4x100m relay team (Ousman Jagne, Jacob Samford, Khamis Hassan, and Tyson Tippett) earned All-American honors with a time of 39.85 seconds and finished in fifth place.

T. Tippett doubled back in the 100m dash final and finished in sixth place (10.37 seconds) to earn AA honors.

In the 400m dash finals, J. Samford ran a personal-best time of 47.00 seconds to finish in 13th place. Donovan Castillo (23rd - 47.88) and Joshua Boehm (31st - 48.69) also ran in the final.

The 4x400m relay team (J. Samford, J. Boehm, Joshua Anderson, and D. Castillo) earned AA honors with a sixth-place finish and broke the 12-year-old school record with a time of 3:10.10.

Noah Miller just missed out on earning AA honors in the shot put as he finished in ninth place with a mark of 15.73m, just 0.25m off from eighth place.

In the 5000m run, Javier Garcia finished in 19th place with a time of 15:27.36.

Devin Jackson (26th - 55.46) and Miles Fears (33rd - 56.67) each ran in the 400m hurdle final.

Host school New Mexico JC and South Plains College were the co-national champions as both teams finished with 100 points.

The T-Birds finished the meet with 15 athletes earning a combined 17 AA honors, as both T. Tippett and J. Samford each earned two AA honors.
