Cougars Mount Comeback Win Against T-Birds In OT

Mesa, AZ - A second-half collapse did the Mesa Thunderbirds in on Wednesday evening, as South Mountain prevailed with the 76-70 win in overtime inside of Theo Heap Gymnasium.

With the loss, Mesa drops to 4-11 overall and 2-8 in ACCAC play. South Mountain improves to 9-12 overall with the win and 3-8 in ACCAC play.

The first half featured a tight back and forth battle before Mesa began to pull away. The Thunderbirds took a comfortable 35-26 lead into the halftime break.

South Mountain jumped on the Thunderbirds quickly in the second half. After struggling to hit their shots in the first 20 minutes, the Cougars seemed to have everything working for them in the second half. The South Mountain defense pressured the T-Birds into some costly turnovers, which in turn led to fastbreak points for the Cougars.

Mesa led by seven points with two and a half minutes remaining in the game, before South Mountain rallied and took advantage of a couple of Mesa miscues, to force overtime.

In the extra quarter, South Mountain outscored Mesa 11-5, on their way to the 76-70 victory. Both games between these two squads went to overtime this season, with South Mountain claiming the victories in each game.

In the loss, Quincy Reece finished with a double-double with 19 points on 7-of-17 shooting, to go along with 13 rebounds.

The Thunderbirds return to action this Saturday when they make the short trip over to Chandler-Gilbert Community College. Tip time is slated for 4 pm.
