Men's basketball upsets Scottsdale, 68-58

   Taking the lead early in the second half, the Mesa men's basketball team held off ACCAC rival Scottsdale, 68-58, Saturday afternoon at Theo Heap Gym.

  Timmy Johnson's jumper at the 16:05 mark gave MCC a 33-32 lead it never relinquished. The final margin of ten was the T-Birds' largest lead.

  The victory improves Mesa to 4-9 for the season with a 2-6 ACCAC mark. Scottsdale slips to 10-6, 4-4.

  MCC was paced by a season-high 22 points off the bench by Justin Chambers, on 8-14 shooting from the floor.. B.J. Burries added 16.  SCC was paced by Isaiah Floyd with 17 and Cameron Faas with 16.

Meanwhile, the T-Birds limited the conference's leading scorer, Unisa Turay, to a season low five points.

  The Artichokes closed to within one, 52-51, on a jumper by Faas, with 5:59 to play. But Mesa then went on a 6-0 run ignited by a three-pointer by Burries. SCC never got closer than four as Mesa closed the game with an 16-7 run.

  MCC won the rebou7ding battle, 39-36, with Quincy Reece grabbing 15.

  The T-Birds will travel to Cochise next Wednesday and return home to meet South Mountain on Wednesday, Jan. 26.
