2021 Fiesta Bowl Junior College Shootout - Day 2 Recap

MESA, AZ - The second day of action in the 2021 Fiesta Bowl Junior College Shootout, was a classic; capped off by the 1st ranked Salt Lake defeating 8th ranked Indian Hills. Below is a short recap on all four games from today, along with the schedule for Wednesday's finale.

Day 2 (Tuesday, December 27) Results:

2:00pm - Game 5 - Glendale 64 vs New Mexico JC 70

The Glendale Gauchos (9-5 overall) came out hot on Tuesday afternoon, striking for nine points in the first four minutes, as they held a lead over the New Mexico Junior College Thunderbirds (8-6 overall). That lead would not hold, as the T-Birds came roaring back and would hold the lead for good the remainder of the game. At the half, New Mexico led 35-28 and would increase that lead in the final 20 minutes to earn a 70-64 victory. In the win, New Mexico was led by Dario Domingos, who finished with 18 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the field.

4:00pm - Game 6 - South Plains 58 vs. (RV) Midland 38

The second game of the afternoon featured two squads in the same conference facing one another. While this game won't affect their conference records, it is the first of their three meetings on the season. Midland (9-5 overall); who is currently receiving votes in the latest NJCAA Men's Basketball Division I National Poll, faced a scrappy South Plains (5-6 overall) squad who plays tougher than their record shows. In a low-scoring first half, South Plains limited Midland to just 19 points in the first 20 minutes of play. In the second half, South Plains kept their foot on the gas pedal and never let up, cruising to a 58-38 upset victory over the Chaps. The 38 points scored by Midland, sets a tournament record for lowest points scored by a team in the Fiesta Bowl Shootout. With the win, South Plains will face New Mexico JC in the Consolation Championship at 4pm on Wednesday afternoon. The Texans were led in scoring by Kieves Turner, who finished with 12 points of 3-of-7 shooting from the field and 5-of-8 from the free-throw line.

6:00pm - Game 7 - Mesa 51 vs. (#15) Snow 81

The 15th ranked Snow College Badgers (10-3 overall) cruised to a 81-51 win on Tuesday evening, against tournament hosts' Mesa Thunderbirds (3-7 overall). Snow led Mesa 41-17 at halftime, as the T-Birds were limited to just six made shots in the first half on 27 attempts. From deep, the Thunderbirds only converted twice on 13 attempts in the first half. It would not get any easier in the second half, as Snow continued to score at will. Snow advances to the championship game on Wednesday evening, against fellow Scenic West Athletic Conference (SWAC) opponent, Salt Lake Community College at 8pm. The Badgers hosted the Bruins of Salt Lake before the holiday break, falling 94-64.

8:00pm - Game 8 - (#1) Salt Lake 76 vs. (#8) Indian Hills 73

The final game of the evening had a national tournament feel to it. In the second semifinal of the winner's portion of the bracket, the 1st ranked and undefeated Salt Lake Bruins (16-0) faced the 8th ranked Warriors (12-4) from Indian Hills and this game would go down to the wire, with Salt Lake coming out victorious 76-73. In the first 20 minutes, the Bruins and Warriors exchanged jabs in an action packed, fast first half of play. Indian Hills shot 45% from the field in the first half, and limited Salt Lake to 32% shooting from the field. The Bruins got a good chunk of their first half points from the charity stripe, finishing the half 16-of-26 from the free-throw line. In the second half, Indian Hills held the lead until the final three minutes, when the Bruins clawed their way back to the top. Down the final stretch, both teams were in foul trouble and over the limit. It came down to crucial shots and free-throws, and the Bruins would eventually squeak away with the three point win, advancing to Wednesday's championship against fellow conference foe; Snow College. In the win, the Bruins were led by Jordan Brinson's 20 points off the bench, while Quincy McGriff chimed in with 14 points; nine of which came from the free-throw line.
