Mesa, AZ - The Mesa Thunderbirds split their series against the Glendale Gauchos this weekend. Glendale defended their home turf on Friday, winning 5-4. Mesa rebounded on Saturday afternoon by defeating Glendale 7-2.

Game 1

Mesa jumped on the board for three quick runs on Friday to take the early 3-0 lead at Glendale. The Gauchos would respond with a four-run fifth inning to claim their first lead of the day. Glendale would also tack on a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to take a 5-3 lead.

The T-Birds scored a run in the top of the eighth inning and drew within one run, but that is as close as they would get. The Gauchos took Friday's contest by a final of 5-4.

Ayden Alger (0-3) took the loss on the mound for Mesa, lasting 4.2 innings, while allowing four runs; all earned, on five hits with three strikeouts and three walks.

Marshall Williams and Connor Culp both finished with two hits apiece for the Thunderbirds. Williams finished with a double and a triple at the plate.

Game 2

Similar to Friday's game, Mesa struck first and for another three runs; nonetheless, and this time never looked back. The T-Birds defeated the Glendale Gauchos on Saturday afternoon 7-2 at MCC.

The top three in the Thunderbird batting order: Marshall Williams, Thomas Schreffler, and Dean Bittner, combined to go 7-for-10 at the plate with four runs scored, three RBIs, and three walks.

On the mound, Thunderbird starter Colton Vercoe (1-3) was solid in his first win of the season. The righty tossed 6.1 innings, and allowed two runs; both unearned, on five hits with four strikeouts and two walks.

This week, the Thunderbirds will face the Chandler-Gilbert Coyotes in an ACCAC conference match-up. On Tuesday, MCC travels to Chandler-Gilbert, with the first pitch scheduled for 3 pm. Wednesday the two squads will meet up at Mesa Community College also with a 3 pm first pitch.
