(#11) Arizona Western takes down Mesa baseball twice
Mesa, AZ – The 11th-ranked Arizona Western Matadors took down Mesa in a doubleheader Wednesday at the T-Birds' field.
AZW won the first game, scheduled for seven innings, 14-0 in five, and then outlasted MCC in the nightcap, 14-6.
Western is now 35-5 on the year with a 19-3 ACCAC mark, while the T-Birds are 19-17 and 8-14 in conference play.
Game One Recap
AZW broke things open early with a seven-run second inning. MCC was able to solve Arizona Western pitching for only three singles, two by Dean Bittner. The game was halted by the run-rule after five innings.
Game Two Recap
Unlike the first contest, Mesa actually grabbed a 5-1 lead with five runs in the third inning, highlighted by a two-run single by Bittner.
But the Matadors chipped away at the T-Birds' lead with one run in the fourth and three in the fifth to tie the game at 5-5.
AZW then scored a combined seven runs in the seventh and eighth to break the game open.
MCC got two hits each from Thomas Schreffler, Connor Culp and Bittner once again.
Mesa will be back in action again this weekend taking on the nation's No. 1-ranked team, Central Arizona. The first game will be played at CAC Friday at 2 p.m. with the second contest at Mesa Saturday at noon.
