Volleyball joins list of Mesa teams to wear Nike N7 uniforms

Mesa, AZ – Last year MCC was recognized by Nike as being the first two-year college in the nation to participate in its N7 jersey program with women's basketball, men's basketball, and softball wearing own specialized turquoise N7 uniforms at respective American Indian Recognition Day games during their regular seasons.

This year MCC Volleyball becomes the latest team on campus to receive their own Nike N7 uniform, which they will showcase during their upcoming American Indian Recognition volleyball match vs the Pima Aztecs on Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2019. The game will take place in Theo Heap Gymnasium at MCC's Southern and Dobson campus at 7:00 pm.

MCC Volleyball has seen an upswing of success in recent years and head coach Megan Taylor attributes that to bringing in competitive young women who are not only good players but who compete in the classroom as well. Coach Taylor also recognizes that MCC has a large population of Native American students on campus and invites them all out to attend the game. She also wants to invite all local Native American youth volleyball clubs and teams, as well as the greater community, to this event as well.

N7 is a Nike brand aimed at inspiring and enabling Native American and Aboriginal youth in North America to participate in sports and get active while being mindful of at least seven generations beyond. The community involvement aspect goes along with a line of athletic wear, including shorts, shoes, shirts, hoodies, and several other items. The N7 uniforms will be prominently turquoise with red, representing harmony, fellowship, and friendship. More information about Nike N7 can be found here: http://n7fund.com/

"It started with schools wanting to work together with Nike N7 to celebrate Native American Heritage Month," says Sam McCracken, general manager of Nike N7. "It gives them an opportunity to celebrate and support their local tribal communities, to which each program has a distinct, unique connection. The integration of the turquoise uniform is something that makes the opportunity special for their players and their fans."

Major 4-year athletic programs which have worn the N7 jersey in previous seasons include Stanford, Oklahoma State, Haskell, Oral Roberts, New Mexico, Gonzaga, Nevada, Florida State, Oregon State, San Diego State, and Marquette. According to N7, Mesa Community College was the first two-year college to wear the jersey representing Nike N7 as part of their American Indian Recognition initiative in this manner.

MCC's American Indian Institute is again assisting in this collaborative effort and is proud to see another Mesa team showcasing pride and awareness of Native people during the volleyball season. Stay tuned for more information regarding game day events.
