#12 Mesa Wins Slugfest Against #7 Glendale in Five Sets

Mesa, AZ - For the first time in a long time, the Mesa Thunderbirds volleyball team has defeated the Glendale Gauchos, in five incredible sets Friday night at Theo Heap Gym, 22-25, 30-28, 29-27, 24-26, 15-6.

Right away, the gym was ready for a showdown and every fan got its money's worth.

Glendale took control of set one, leading throughout and eventually winning, 22-25.  From there on out, each team exchanged points and leads throughout the last four sets.

"Our girls just went out and fought," said Head Coach Megan Taylor, "we've been focusing on competing when we get into the 20's and we did a great job of that tonight."

Mesa took the lead in set two, 11-7, forcing Glendale to call a timeout.  The T-Birds extended that to 22-18 but the Gauchos fought back to tie the set at 24.  Glendale took the lead at 25-24 with Mesa tying it at 25, with again the Gauchos taking the next point to 26-25.  Mesa then rattled off the next two points but Glendale tied it at 27 and the set eventually tied up at 28.  Mesa however outlasted the Gauchos to win 30-28.

Set three played out the same way, with each team scoring points back and forth.  Once again though, the T-Birds took at 23-18 lead into the final points.  But Glendale is one of the toughest teams in the country for a reason, and once again they battled back to tie the set at 24.  Mesa overcame the Gaucho comeback and took the set, 29-27.

Much like the first set of the night, Glendale jumped out quickly and maintain the lead throughout, but it was the T-Birds who battled back and tied the match at 24, being down 18-13 at one point.  Glendale eventually won the set, 24-26.

The fifth and final set belong to the T-Birds though, as they quickly took a 6-3 lead, forcing the Gauchos to call a timeout.  Mesa had an 8-4 at the switch and eventually won the set, 15-6.

With the win, Mesa moves to 11-5 overall and 4-2 in conference.  The T-Birds will be back home on Wednesday night against Pima, then at Scottsdale on Friday night, each 7 pm starts.
