Mesa Volleyball Wins a 'Match For the Ages' Against Phoenix College in Five Sets

Mesa, AZ- In a playoff type atmosphere with two teams that had major victories against good teams on Wednesday night, the Mesa Thunderbirds and Phoenix College Bears played to the very last point in a dramatic five set ACCAC matchup.

The T-Birds ended up prevailing over the Bears, 17-25, 25-18, 15-25, 25-18, 28-26.

Phoenix came out with all the momentum in set one, as Mesa looked confused and flat as the Bears won, 25-17.

The T-Birds livened up in set two, as they forced PC to take a timeout after Mesa went up 11-7.  The Bears though quickly went on a 6-1 run to force Mesa to call timeout to collect themselves.  And collect themselves they did as they then rattled off five straight points to take 17-13 lead.  Mesa went on to take the set, 25-18.

Set three saw both teams exchange points till the Bears ran away with the set late in the match won it, 25-15.

Mesa, in a must win fourth set, came out and played with purpose.  They took a 12-5 and eventually extended it to a 20-15 advantage.  Mesa took the set again, like the second set, 25-18.

With each team tied with two set wins, what ensued in set five would be one for the ages.  Mesa jumped out to a 7-3 lead, forcing PC to take a timeout.  The T-Birds went into the switching of benches with an 8-4 advantage.  But switching sides was just what the Bears needed as they went on a 7-3 run to tie the set at 11.

From there on out, Mesa and PC would combine for 14 ties and 13 lead changes.  Five straight times, the Bears had a one point advantage and the opportunity to take the match but Mesa managed to tie it back up.  Each team made incredible plays and the crowd on every point earned would go bananas.  The atmosphere seemed like a regional championship match.

However, after it was all said and done, Mesa eventually took the set and match, 28-26.  Fans couldn't have asked for a more competitive, passion filled match than the one they witnessed at Theo Heap Gym Friday night.
