Four singles players, two doubles teams, reach quarter-finals at NJCAA women's tennis championship
Tucson, AZ – Four Mesa singles players and two doubles teams have reached the quarter-finals at the NJCAA Division I Women's Tennis National Championships.
After the first two days of play Mesa is in seventh place with 22 points. ASA and Tyler are tied for first with 27.
Mesa's No. 3 singles player, Yolena Carlon, defeated Jamie Waites, of Collin Co., 6-2, 6-4 and then stopped fifth-seeded 5 Onane Yehouenou of ASA Miami, 6-2, 0-6, 6-3, to set up a match with No. 4 seed Dougliesy Linarez, of ASA Miami, Tuesday at 10:00 a.m.
At No. 4 singles Julia Ortiz, seeded fifth, received a first round bye and then vanquished Pima's Dana Pineda, 6-1, 6-2. Ortiz will face No. 3-seed Jueng Wang, of ASA, at 9:30 Tuesday.
Hannah Nelson, MCC's fifth-seeded player at No. 5 singles also received a bye and then stopped Abby Hayes of Central Alabama, 6-0, 6-0. She will face No. 2-seed Lisa Khamassi, of ASA at 9:30.
At No. 6, Michelle Fournier, got a first round bye and then won over Shai Cartmill, of Barton, 6-1, 6-1 to set up a 9:30 match with top-seeded Elena Tendero, of Tyler.
MCC's No. 1 and 2 doubles teams both advanced. At No. 1, Khanh Huynh and Naa Ankra, the No. 4 seeds, got a first-round bye and then beat Mikayal Lopez and Francisca Nyarko, of New Mexico Military, 7-6 (2), 6-1 and will meet seventh-seeded Ida Longwe and Neus Torregosa, of Barton at 2:00 p.m.
The T-Birds' No. 2 team of Carlon and Ortiz, seeded No. 6, beat Katie Burrall and Jenna Lyons, Miss. Gulf Coast after a first-round bye. They will play Steffany Bermudez and Sarah Mansen, the No. 3 seeds from Seward Co. at 1:00.
The bad news for the T-Birds is that both MCC's No. 1 and 2 singles players, Huynh and Ankrah were defeated in the second round. Huynh, seeded sixth, beat Alesha Triplett, of Snead, 6-0, 6-1 but then fell to Paola Bau, Marion, 6-0, 6-2. Ankrah won her first-round match against Katy Boler, of Snead, 6-4, 6-2 but dropped a 6-7 (7), 2-6 decision to third-seeded Anita Detlava, St. Petersburg,
