Women's tennis scores another win over a four-year school, tops Westmont (Calif.), 7-2
Mesa, AZ – It was another solid victory for the Mesa women's tennis team over a four-year college as the T-Birds downed NAIA member Westmont (Calif.), 7-2 Friday.
In winning its eighth consecutive match, 11th-ranked MCC won five of the six singles matches and two doubles.
"Overall it was a very good day," said head coach Adam Cohen. "It's the best we have looked in singles so far this year. Doubles overall was good. We let one slip away at the 1 spot today. Not because we played bad, but because we took our foot off the accelerator. Should be a good lesson to learn now as opposed to down the finish line. In singles Charlotte Lotte had won a tough first set (7-6) but I pulled her out after she dove for a ball and hyper extended her knee during the third point of the second set, otherwise a sweep in singles was looking probable.
Mesa's three ranked singles players all scored victories. Khanh Huynh, ranked No. 13 in the nation defeated Isabel Lee, the 42nd ranked player in the NAIA, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 1. Naa Ankrah, ranked No. 32, stopped 19th ranked Cade Peterson, 6-3, 6-7 (10-7) at No. 2 and Yolanda Carlon, No. 43 in the country was a 6-1, 6-0, winner over Bruna Pacheco Chavez, at No. 3.
Mesa moves back into ACCAC play next week, visiting Glendale Tuesday at 1:30 p.m.
