Women's Tennis takes third at NJCAA Division I nationals
TYLER, Texas - The Mesa women's tennis team compledted what is arguably the greatest season in school history by placing third at the NJCAA Division I National Championships Thursday.
The all-freshman MCC squad scored 32 points to trail champion ASA College-Miami, which had 51 and host Tyler with 45.
In MCC's bid for an individual flight champion second-seeded Maria Garduno (Fr., San Luis Potosi, Mexico) fell in the No. 6 singles final to No. 1 seeded Mikayla Lowrence, of ASA, in a hard-fought match, 5-7, 4-6.
The third place finish was the T-Birds' best since 1984 when they placed second.
Mesa finished its season with a 17-1 record, losing only to NCAA Division I New Mexico State. Along the way MCC recorded 14 9-0 shutouts against possibly the strongest schedule ever played by a Mesa women's tennis team.
