Men's and Women's Tennis Score Big Wins Over Ranked New Mexico Military

MESA, AZ – The Mesa men’s and women’s tennis teams each scored impressive victories over visiting New Mexico Military Saturday.  

The fifth-ranked MCC men took down No. 13 NMMI, 8-1, and the 12th-ranked T-Bird women scored a 6-3 victory over the No. 10 Broncos.  

For the men, Sasha Modica rallied for a huge win at No. 1 singles, knocking off 11th-ranked Herman Abban, 2-6, 6-1, 7-5.  

Mesa then dominated at the bottom of the singles lineup with both 30th-ranked Max Wightman at No. 4 and Eduardo Cuoto at No. 5 each winning 6-0, 6-0.  

The MCC women got several big wins on the way to their victory.  

No. 1 Khahn Hunh had little trouble with 43rd-ranked Thea Minor, winning, 6-1, 6-2.  

She also teamed with Emily Chang for a win over Minor and Lorraine Banimataku, who were ranked eighth in the country, 9-7.  

Maria Garduno also knocked off a nationally-ranked opponent at No. 4 singles with a 3-6, 6-1 (108) victory over No. 48 Lorish Puluspene.  

In addition, Julia Ortiz won her No. 6 singles match over Jewel Ellis, 6-0, 6-0 and Naa Ankrah was a 6-3, 6-0 winner at No. 5 over Amanda Hawkins at No. 6.  

Ortiz and Hannah Nelson teamed for a win at No. 3 doubles over Hawkins and Ellis, 8-0.  

The T-Birds close their regular seasons Tuesday facing Glendale. The men are at home and the women away with both matches starting at 1:30 p.m.
