Curiel, Madsen advance in singles at NJCAA women's tennis championship

  TUCSON, AZ - In early results from Monday play at the NJCAA Division I Women's Tennis National Championships, two of Mesa's four singles players that made it through round one have advanced to the quarter-finals.

  At the end of the day MCC was tied for 17th place among the 26 competing teams.

  Desiree Curiel (So., Globe-Miami, AZ/Miami H.S.) and Sydney Madsen (So., Orem, Utah/Perry (AZ) H.S.) both advanced.

  Curiel, the No. 8 seed at No. 4 singles defeated Erma Hermandez, of Pima, 6-4, 6-1 and will play Tuesday against top-seeded Mingxiu Du, of ASA, at 9:00 a.m.

  Madsen, playing at No. 6, won over Jami Daugherty, of Meridian, 6-2, 4-6, 6-1. She will face third-seeded Autria Compton, of Tyler, Tuesday at 8:30 a.m.

  No. 1 player Rachael Eshillonu fell to top-seeded Macarena Oliveras, of ASA, 0-6, 0-6.

  Sheridan Skarda (Fr., Mesa, AZ/Red Mountain H.S.) lost at No. 3 singles to Jaycie Talbot, of Seminole State, 4-6, 1-6.

  In consolation matches, No. 5 Vanessa Mitrica (So., Mesa, AZ/Red Mountain H.S.) received a bye into the quarter-finals and will play Leslie Weinreich, of Hardford at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday and No. 2 Michelle Fournier (Fr., Chicago, Ill/Saguaro (AZ) H.S.) lost to Adria Barnes, of Itawamba, 4-8

  In doubles consolation matches, Eshillonu and Skarda at No. 1 received a bye and will play at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday againstAmanda Bertoldi and Rachael Farmer of Snead State. Curiel and Fournier got a bye at No. 2 and will face Nieszka Szudy and Linsey Walker, of Moraine Valley, at 12:00 p.m. and Madsen and Mitrica at No. 3 drew a bye and will meet Korynne Arnold and Jamie Tubao, of Harford at 11:30 a.m.

  Doubles consolation matches are being played later Monday.
