Hough powers Lady T-Birds to victory in season opener

Saturday August 24, 2024 - 11:50 p.m. | Dylan DeVlieger

The Lady T-Birds secured their first win of the 2024 season on Saturday night as they took down Chandler-Gilbert, 1-0.

After the start of the game was delayed over an hour due to a lightning delay in the men's game the ladies took to the pitch to begin their season. Both teams played with similar physicality and veracity for most of the match leading to a scoreless 70 plus minutes.

Neither team could gain an edge on the other as offensive runs were met with either a goalie save or a defender recovering at the last second to stop the push.

In the 78th minute Mesa broke the deadlock as Hailey Hough blasted a shot past the Coyotes keeper into the back of the net giving her team the 1-0 advantage. Though the T-Birds had the lead, the job was nowhere near complete as the Coyotes with their backs against the wall felt the urgency to tie the game back up.

CGCC would make stronger pushes on the offensive end until the last second, in the 82nd minute the Coyotes seemed to have a clear shot on goal to match Mesa but a huge save by Kennedy Birk saved the day for the T-Birds.

In the final four minutes of action Mesa was able to stave off multiple near goal opportunities by CGCC as they would work together defensively to secure the win.

With the victory Mesa improves their record to 1-0 (1-0 ACCAC) and will be back in action on Tuesday for their home opener as they host Gateway.
