Moore's OT goal lifts women's soccer past No. 11 Pima, 3-2

MESA, AZ - Monique Moore (So., Chandler, AZ/Hamilton H.S.) scrambled past Pima goalkeeper Angelica Gonzalez and scored on an empty net with 5:16 left in the first overtime to lift the Mesa women's soccer team to a 3-2 win over 11th-ranked Pima and keep MCC's Region I playoff hopes alive in action Thursday at John D. Riggs Stadium.

The T-Birds entered play Thursday needing wins in both of their final two games to claim the playoff spot and reached half their goal by defeating a team they had lost to earlier in the season, 7-1.

Moore got past Gonzalez after the keeper came out to the top of the box once Moore had slipped past another PCC defender.

Now, the Thunderbirds have to go on the road Saturday and defeat third place Paradise Valley in order to claim their spot. MCC tied the Puma's in their first meeting, 2-2.

After a scoreless first half, Moore put MCC n the board firrst with a goal in the 54th minute off an assist by Tawsi Rohner (Fr., Gilbert, AZ/Gilbert H.S.).

Mackenzie Mabrey (So., Cottonwood, AZ/Mingus Union H.S.) then stunned the Aztecs with a score in the 65th minute, putting the T-Birds in front, 2-0.

Pima halved the deficit with a highly disputed goal by Devyn Hunley in the 66th minute on a play in which MCC goalkeeper Danielle Torres (So., Yuma, AZ/Kofa H.S.) was knocked to the ground. Torres, this week named ACCAC Goalkeeper of the Week, had a sensational night making nine saves.

Shannon Shiekds then put a dagger in Mesa's hopes with a goal with less than five minutes to play before Moore sent the Sophomore Night crowd home happy with her overtime heroics.

Mesa is now 9-5-5 but trails sixth-place Phoenix by two points in the chase for the final playoff spot. PC is finished for the year, so an MCC win at Paradise Valley Saturday would give the T-Birds three points and the berth.
