Women's soccer can't catch Scottsdale in 2-1 loss

  MESA, AZ - Fighting to stay alive in the race for a Region I playoff berth, the Mesa women's soccrer team dropped a 2-1 decision to Scottsdale Tuesday evening at John D. Riggs Stadium.

  MCC is now 6-5-4 and in eighth place in the ACCAC with another crucial game looming Thursday at home with seventh place Phoenix.

  In Tuesday's contest SCC jumped to a fast 1-0 lead with a goal in the third minute by Nataly Escamalia.

  Early in the second half Erica Ancich (So., Gilbert, AZ/Campo Verde H.S.) knotted the score with her second goal of the season.

  However, Haley Velez gave the Arichokes the lead for good ten minutes later and Scottsdale held on for the victory that raised its record to 8-3-3, 7-3-3 in ACCAC play.

  The T-Birds have four regular season games remaining in their effort to reach the playoffs. Thursday's game with Phoenix begins at 8:00 p.m.
