Thatcher, AZ- Do you believe in miracles?
If you ask Mesa women's basketball assistant coach Sam Stevens he would say no. He always knows his teams can compete and win against anyone. But to the average Joe, the idea that Mesa would go into Thatcher to face a 21-8 overall, 18-3 in the ACCAC Gila Monster squad, with only seven healthy bodies and battle them to the wire and win on a buzzer beater?
Miracle.
Coach Stevens said after the game that the Mesa players went out and played with that look in their eyes that only winners have.
With Natalie Stilwell combining for a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds, Briana Clah netting 24 points, five rebounds and five assists and Allies Fuller chipping in with 14 points, Mesa controlled most of the game and kept knocking the Gila Monsters back on their heels.
With a 31-24 halftime lead, the Gila Monsters did manage to gain a lead, at one point going up by ten. Mesa wouldn't allow that to stand in their way as they scored 18 points in the fourth quarter and tied the game under 30 seconds with an Allies Fuller put back.
The Gila Monsters missed their oppurtunity on their final possession. Mesa called timeout on the missed shot and planned one final attempt at winning.
On a broken inbound play, Rebecca Rudd ended up with the ball and drained a three as the final zero's went on the board to give Mesa the three point victory.
With the win, Mesa moves to 14-15 overall and 11-10 in the ACCAC. Mesa has one last game of the regular season at Tohono O'Oodham. If the T-Birds win their regular season finale, there is a good chance Mesa will host a playoff game at Theo Heap Gym as the #2 seed.
