Women's Basketball hustle to a huge win over Arizona Western, 66-61

Mesa, AZ- Mesa women's basketball team proved one important thing Wednesday night: they can win big games when their backs are against the wall.

The T-Birds came into tonights contest with a 1-4 record, with a heap load of injuries, the most recent coming to freshman Sham Troupe with a concussion, which only left eight healthy bodies to battle the 4-1 Arizona Western Matadors.

But all eight players stepped up to the challenge and played their hearts out to defeat the Matadors, 66-61.

Mesa was led by Janessa Aukward who had 17 points on 6-19 shooting with 15 points coming on 5-13 from three.

Things looked bleak for Mesa with one minute remaining in the third quarter when the Matadors connected on a three pointer to extend their lead by 13, 51-38.  But within the last minute, Aukward drained two three pointers to cut the Western lead to 51-44.

The T-Birds then outscored the Matadors in the fourth quarter 22-10.  With 32 seconds left, Destinee Wright hit two clutch free throws to tie the game at 61.  Mesa then made five more free throws to finish off the Matadors and move on to a 2-4 record, 1-1 in ACCAC.

The T-Birds will have a week off before playing again at home against Phoenix College December 2nd.
