Pima edges Mesa women, 55-54

TUCSON, AZ - In a tight battle, Mesa could not get a final shot to fall and fell in an ACCAC thriller with Pima, 55-54.

Lacey Viselli (So., Surprise, AZ/Valley Vista H.S.) got a shot off driving the lane that bounced off with about two seconds remaining. Kylie Herd (So., Phoenix, AZ/Arcadia H.S.) got the rebound under the basket, tried to go back up and was seemingly fouled and not able to get a shot off at all, but no foul was called.

The loss shrinks Mesa's (17-8, 12-6) lead in Division II of the ACCAC to one game with four to play, but gives the Aztecs (14-12, 11-7) a tie-breaker should the regular season end deadlocked.

Mesa grabbed a 28-23 halftime lead but then trailed much of the second half.

The T-Birds took a 15-13 lead on a jumper by Erica Vasquez (So., Mesa, AZ/Red Mountain H.S.) and stayed on top until Heather Rogers scored for PCC with 10:50 to play to put her team up, 42-41.

That was part of a 15-2 run that saw the Aztecs turn a 39-33 deficit into a 48-41 lead.

MCC battled back and regained the lead, 54-53 on a three-pointer by Janessa Aukward (Fr., Laveen, AZ/Sierra Linda H.S.) at the 1:28 mark.

Melody McLaughlin answered with a jumper at the 1:16 mark that resulted in the final score.

Viselli and Herd each scored 11 for Mesa.

The T-Birds will host Central Arizona Saturday in a 2:00 p.m. contest.
