Missed free throws, turnovers, doom women in 57-53 loss at seventh-ranked, DI, Eastern Arizona

THATCHER, AZ - Unable to hit key free throws down the stretch and turning the ball over eight times more than their opponents, the Mesa women fell to Eastern Arizona, 57-53, Wednesday night.

MCC (11-6, 6-4) made just 14 of 23 free throws and committed 23 turnovers, and yet stayed right with the Gila Monsters (16-1, 10-0) who are ranked seventh in the nation in Division I. Coupled with a very slow start which saw MCC trailing, 29-18, at halftime, it resulted in a close loss to another Division I team.

Two players did the bulk of the scoring for the T-Birds. Kylie Herd (So., Phoenix, AZ/Arcadia H.S.) scored 17 points and had seven rebounds. Lacey Viselli (So., Surprise, AZ/Valley Vista H.S.) added 15 points and four assists.

Mesa dominated the rebounding with a 40-29 advantage with Taylor Reed (Fr., Kingman, AZ/Kingman H.S.) adding six.

MCC travels to Tohono O'odham Saturday afternoon to close the first half of the ACCAC season at 2:00 p.m.
