Women's Basketball takes finale at Scottsdale tournament, tops DI Howard, 60-42

SCOTTSDALE, AZ - Two big first half runs helped the Mesa women's basketball team to a 60-42 win over Division I Howard in MCC 's last game at the Bill Culver Memorial Classic at Scottsdale Community College Wednesday.

With the win the T-Birds complete the 2014 portion of their schedule with a 9-4 record.

Mesa started slowly against the Owls (4-10), falling behind 12-3 in the first six minutes.

A pair of free throws by Megan Gillespie (So., Phoenix, AZ/Arcadia H.S.) ignited a 12-0 burst which saw MCC grab a lead it would never relinquish, although it was tied once at 19-19.

That tie began another strong stretch by the Thunderbirds who out-scored the Hawks 19-3 over the final 6:15 of the half to surge in front, 38-22 at halftime.

With its running game in high gear at the end of the first 20 minutes Mesa scored ten points on fast breaks and got the other nine on three consecutive three-pointers by Briana Clah (Fr., Chinle, AZ/Many Farms H.S.).

The T-Birds controlled the second half, never allowing Howard closer than 12.

Lacey Viselli (So., Surprise, AZ/Valley Vista H.S.) and Kylie Herd (So., Phoenix, AZ/Acrcadia H.S.) each scored ten for MCC while Clah and Gillespie added nine each. Herd completed her second straight double-double with ten rebounds.

Mesa will face another Texas team, Division I Midland, Saturday in Theo Heap Gym at 5:30 p.m.
