Dominant second half helps women's basketball over Spokane, 62-33

Mesa, AZ- The Mesa women's basketball team used a dominant second half to take down the Bigfoot of College of Spokane, 62-33, at Theo Heap Gym Sunday afternoon.

Kylie Herd(So., Phoenix, AZ, Arcadia H.S.) led the way for the T-Birds, scoring a career high 21 points and pulling down seven rebounds.

Mesa worked against a Bigfoot zone defense for a majority of the game and the T-Birds ran its offence straight through Herd and former Arcadia High teammate Megan Gillespie(So., Phoenix, AZ, Arcadia H.S.) who dominated the low post, scoring a combined 27 points, with 13 rebounds and six assists.

The T-Birds used a patient offense, with Didi Moloi(So., Gilbert, AZ, Campo Verde H.S.) scoring eight points to go along with three steals.

Both teams were tied midway through the first half when Mesa tightened up its defense, only allowing six points for close to 10 minutes while Mesa scored 11 to head into halftime with a 23-18 lead.

Then the flood gates opened up for the T-Birds in the second half, going on a 12-2 run in the first four and half minutes of the half to extend its lead to 35-20.  Mesa continued its stingy defense by only allowing Spokane five points in 12 minutes as the Bigfoot shot a terrible 15 percent from the field, going 1-14 from three and Mesa outrebounding Spokane 28-9 in the half.

Briana Clah(Fr., Chinle, AZ, Many Farms, AZ) drained two three pointers for Mesa, Natalie Stillwell(Fr., Fountain Hills, AZ, Fountain Hills, AZ) contributed four points with six boards while Taylor Reed(Fr., Kingman, AZ, Kingman H.S.) pulled down 10 rebounds.

Mesa will be on the road on Wednesday as they get back to ACCAC play when they play at Phoenix College and then will be back home next Saturday against the Glendale Gauchos.

Both games will be broadcast on T-Bird Sports Live, radio stream on Wednesday at Phoenix College, 5:30 tip then back to the live video stream on Saturday at 2 p.m.
