Lovato wins pole vault title at NJCAA outdoor championships

Hobbs, N.M – Continuing what has become a Mesa tradition, Noah Lovato won MCC's fourth national pole vault championship since 2010 at the NJCAA Outdoor National Championships Thursday.

  Lovato cleared 15-7 to claim the title which the T-Birds have also won six times indoors since 2008. Other Mesa champions outdoors were Robert Haynie in 2010, Pau Tonnesen in both 2012 and 2013 and Jacob Flores in 2014.

  Only a few event finals were completed Thursday. Sadie Sweeney scored MCC's only other point by finishing eighth in the women's hammer with a toss of 158-11.

  In other final action: Colton Root was tenth in the hammer (159-3): Chance Gribauskas 11th in the pole vault (14-1 ¼); Flyn Fuhrmann 11th in the 10,000-meters (33:35.37); Marquis Brown-Tiller 15th in the 400 meters (48.34) and Hannah Stultz 19th in the hammer (133-10).

  The first day of competition was also held in the multi-events. For the women, Rees Young was second after the first four events of the heptathlon with 2776 points, while Juba Clay was eighth at the mid-points of the decathlon with 3212 points.

  Marcus Naisant, ranked second nationally in the decathlon, was unable to compete.

  The championships continue Friday and Saturday.
