Final regular season meet proves fruitful for track and field
Mesa, AZ – The final regular season meet of the year for the Mesa track and field teams proved quite fruitful, yielding several new, and improved, NJCAA national championship qualifying marks.
Hosting their own Mesa Invitational Friday, the T-Birds had two athletes put their name on the list for the first time in any event, two others add new events to their list and yet another show a great improvement.
The MCC men had the two athletes that punched their tickets to the national championships at Hobbs, N.M. for the first time.
Van Harvey Vance won the 400 meters in 48.02 which would rank him 14th in the nation prior to any other marks set this weekend.
In addition, Benjamin Brady covered the 3,000 steeplechase in 9:55.94. Also in that race Flyn Fuhrmann improved his time to 9:54.39.
Makel Hubbard won the high jump at 6-10 ¾, but has already produced a leap of 6-11.
For the Mesa women, Quinn Johnson sliced more than 11 seconds off her mark in the 5000, recording a 17:50.59 while winning the event.
Reese Young qualified for the first time in the javelin at 121-1 and Sadie Sweeney beat the standard in the hammer with a toss of 155-6, but already has a better mark.
Mesa will host the Region I championships at John D. Riggs Stadium. The multi-events will be contested April 22-23 and all other events April 30 and May 1.
