As nationals near track and field continues to improve qualifying marks

Mesa, AZ – As the NJCAA Outdoor National Track and Field Champions near the Mesa teams made gains in several of the qualifying marks at the Mesa Invitational Friday.

  For the No. 7 men, there was one brand new mark and a major improvement in another.

  Alex Kellybrew added the 100 meters to his list which already includes the 200. Kellybrew recorded a 10.64 clocking to put him at No. 32 on the qualifying list.

  In addition, Marcus Naisant advanced his standard by more than nine feet to 196-4 which places him at No. 3 in the country.

  Two other athletes bettered the NJCAA standards Friday, but already have better marks. Antwan Ross-Jones cleared 6-8 in the high jump. However he has already leapt 7- ½ and is tied for third in the nation. Nikaeus Hale-Mercer ranks seventh nationally in the shot put. He tossed a 51-9 ¼ but already has thrown 55-1.

  For the 17th-ranked women, Quinn Johnson improved her standing in the 1500 to 4:55.98 which ranks her 22nd.

  MCC's pole vaulting duo of Justice Angel and Miranda Worthen both equaled their qualifying marks with Angel clearing 10-11 ¾ and Worthen 10-6. Angel is No. 6 in the nation and Worthen No. 11.

  The regular season comes to a close at the Region I championships which will again by hosted by Mesa. The multi-events will be contested April 23-24 and all other events May 1 and 3 at John D. Riggs Stadium.
