Track and field teams snag six more NJCAA qualifying marks at PVCC
Paradise Valley, AZ – Six new and improved NJCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship qualifying marks were set as Mesa competed at the Cody McBride Memorial Invitational Meet at Paradise Valley Friday and Saturday.
The T-Birds currently have two athletes ranked as No. 1 in the nation in their respective events.
Indoor pole vault champion Kyle Downey has the top mark of 16- ¾ which he set two weeks ago and then equaled at PVCC. High jumper Antwan Ross-Jones cleared 6-9 ¾ over the weekend to improve his mark and claim the No. 1 spot in the nation.
Eric Cochran joined the list in the pole vault at 14-7 ¼ and is tied for sixth in the nation.
Cameron Lewis bettered his standard in the discus with a toss of 163-1 and currently ranks No. 3 in the county. He also topped the mark in the shot put at 52-6 ¾, however the 53-9 ¾ he recorded at Arizona State ranks him fourth nationally.
In addition, Carver Dumas compiled 6558 points in the decathlon to rank him third in the country.
On the women's side, Quinn Johnson and Miranda Worthen joined the list for the first time this weekend. Johnson recorded a 4:57.17 in the 1500 to grab ninth place nationally and Worthen is tied for sixth in the pole vault at 10-6.
Justice Angel also vaulted 10-6, but her 10-11 ¾ the previous weekend in Tucson has her tied for second place.
The two teams will return to Paradise Valley Saturday for the ACCAC championships.
