Mesa posts good performances as Region I track and field championships get under way

  Mesa, AZ – On a day dominated by field events and running preliminaries, Mesa athletes produced three improved NJCAA nationals qualifying marks and won two events at the Region I track and field championships at John D. Riggs Stadium Tuesday.

  The MCC women hold a slim lead over Central Arizona, 73-70, after the first eight events. The T-Bird men are second after seven events, trailing Pima, 77-71.

  Two MCC men posted better qualifying performances. Cameron Lewis added nearly 12 feet to his mark in the hammer with a 172-4 heave. Clay Campbell won the event at 181-9, but already has a better standard.

  Adrian King added ten inches to his NJCAA performance in the long jump leaping 23-7 ½.

  In addition, Antwan Ross-Jones bettered the qualifying mark in the high jump at 6-9 3/4 but already has a higher leap.

  On the women's side, Calla Reed and Ally Keil took 1-2 in the pole vault, Reed with a jump of 12-0 and Keil at 11-5 ¾. Both are better than the qualifying standard, but both have already jumped higher.

  Sayge McKrill improved her mark in the hammer to 143-0. Onnika Scott recorded a toss of 170-2 and already has a longer throw.

  The women's 4x800 relay team added ten points to the MCC total, but was the only team entered.

  The meet concludes Thursday at John D. Riggs Stadium.
