Newcomers highlight track and field performance at Azuza Pacific
AZUZA, Calif. – Two newcomers who did not participate indoors for Mesa in track and field highlighted the T-Birds' performance at the huge Bryan Clay Invitational Thursday and Friday at Azuza Pacific University.
Antwan Ross-Jones and Alex Kellybrew both have qualified for the NJCAA track and field championships in events in which MCC did not have national participants indoors.
Ross-Jones, who played basketball for Mesa during the winter, won the high jump competition over a field of 38 participants with a leap of 6-10 ½. He had already cleared 6-9 at the ACCAC championships.
Kellybrew beat the NJCAA standard in both the 100 and 200 meters and helped the 4 X 100 relay team to a qualifying mark. He ran 10.63 in the 100 meters, 21.38 in the 200 and joined Jaylen Higgins, Carver Dumas and Keith Morgan on the relay which posted a time of 41.64.
In addition for the MCC men, Cameron Lewis posted a 153-10 in the discus and Riley Korcuska cleared 14-11 ¾ in the pole vault, although both already have better NJCAA marks this season.
On the women's side, Sayge McKrill improved her mark in the discus to 140-10 ¾. Samantha Miller added her name in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11:21.04. Calla Reed cleared 11-5 in the pole vault but already has a better mark and Allyson Girard significantly improved her qualifying standard in the 5000 with a 17:23.16, 27 seconds better than her previous time.
MCC will host its own invitational meet on Friday prior to entertaining the Region I championships which will begin April 24.
